There's something about the contrast between the natural patterns rust makes and its man-made origins that keeps drawing me to it as a subject.

I realized, as I was framing up this shot, that I was standing under an unstable sandstone bluff. OK, collapses are very rare. And there are no signs warning beach-goers about the danger in this area. But still. A little scary in the moment.

A broader, straighter stretch of the beach creates a more uniform, patterned flow of sand and images.

Again, contrast was the only thing adjusted in this image, to bring out the patterns in the sand.

The black and white sands at nearby Solana Beach are amazing. The grains are very fine, and apparently of different densities. The action of the waves paints the beach in intricate patterns.

All I did to this photograph was to add an overlay layer, then reduce the transparency of the top layer until the contrast looked good. No conversion to monochrome was done. These are the natural colors of the sands at this beach.

It's been some time since I posted to the blog. My schedule at work necessitated a focus there, and my photographic time dwindled to nearly none. That changed during a much needed vacation, and I'm quite happy with some of the resulting pictures.

I noticed that it took some time to get my photographer's eye back. Even now it's not as strong as it was before I had to step away for a bit. A lesson there: try to shoot every day. Keep those muscles toned up and working to improve.

The loading dock behind the Prado theater has been used, for years, as an assembly and painting area for the scenery used in the various productions staged there. The overspray patterns and paint splatters that cover the dock are fascinating ghosts of all that creative energy.

Balboa Park features several fountains, but the largest is at one end of a long, grand pedestrian walkway. Most nights, this fountain has been silent. On this night, however, it was blasting away, lit from below by several bright yellow spotlights.

This is a long exposure, 3/10 of a second. The LCD screen on my PowerShot is quite small, and my eyesight isn't the best anymore. So I wasn't sure how the water would look until I opened the file on my computer. I was very happily surprised that the water had gone a little silky, without losing the form and shadow. I love the light in this photograph.

Another bright sunlit day in San Diego, making the location of objects and scenes worth photographing a challenge. The high contrast works, in some cases. This palm trunk is nearly pure white. The bright grazing sunlight brought out the texture, as well as casting one side in shadow.

Another sunny day shot, focusing this time on the stark shadows cast by the bars of this horse corral. I took a half dozen shots here, trying to get the depth of field right, in order to keep the bars and ground in focus, and (re)arranging the composition. I'm happy with the results, but I think there's more photographic gold to be had in this location. I'll be back.
